Clemens Brenninkmeijer understands that sustainability ambitions cannot be achieved in isolation; within organisations, we must collaborate at all levels to raise the bar and demonstrate how it can be done. As Head of Sustainability for Redevco, Clemens is committed to defining and setting the company’s sustainability roadmap. To do this, he embeds corresponding KPIs in core asset management and development processes and seeks opportunities to challenge the Board to incorporate impact as an indicator in remuneration policies. Through Investment Committee membership, he also ensures that financial decisions are mission-aligned and adequately incorporate sustainability risks. By engaging directly with development colleagues, Clemens arranges for every project to set individual targets, informed by a sustainable design guide. He applies pressure to challenging the project and design teams to ensure these are realised, as well as ensuring continual internal and external impact reporting, knowledge sharing and education, and narrative building. In his hands, that narrative thrives on three things: repetition, repetition, repetition. Of impact, and the why, what, and how. Clemens believes the difference he’s making originates from allowing his “passion for our ambition to shine through as authentically as possible”. It’s infectious, playing a role also in the support he gives corporate sustainability ambassadors – as does the importance of communicating positively about the opportunities and the business case for action.
